As the vaccination program gets started, the State of Michigan is reporting new cases of the coronavirus.
The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 437,985 as of Monday, including 10,752 deaths, state officials reported.
Monday’s update includes 7,205 new cases and 90 additional deaths over the past two days.
Frontline health care workers at two Michigan hospitals Monday were the first people in the state to receive the COVID-19 vaccine authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The first round of Covid-19 vaccines were administered and the first person to receive one in Michigan is a doctor from Grand Rapids.
Dr. Marc McClelland, a pulmonologist who has been treating COVID-19 patients in the ICU, received the shot at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Four other Spectrum Health staff members have received a first dose of the vaccine. McClelland said he felt no symptoms or side effects thus far. Speaking at a virtual news conference to WZZM TV, McClellan states, Having seen what I ve seen over the last several months and having lived in this COVID world now, this is clearly the path forward and the answer. I am very hopeful right now.

McClelland was the first employee at Spectrum Health, and among the first statewide, to receive a dose of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine. The drug’s distribution kicked off Monday, and is being called the biggest vaccination campaign in U.S. history.

MARQUETTE It is anticipated that UP Health System-Marquette will receive the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines by next week, said Dr. Robert Lorinser, medical director of the Marquette County Health Department, Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Western Upper Peninsula Health Department and Public Health, Delta & Menominee Counties.
“As soon as it’s here, we’re ready to go,” Lorinser said.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services indicated it has set an initial operational goal of vaccinating 70% of individuals age 16 or older, or about 5.6 million people, for COVID-19 by the end of 2021.
