Navigating COVID-19 has been tough for museums across the country, facing shutdowns then cautious reopenings as the virus spread again this fall.
The Maritime Museum of Amelia Island is no different, docked across the railroad tracks from the Amelia River at the west end of Fernandina Beach s historic downtown.
Staffed by volunteers in part of a blue-and-white building at 115 S. Second St., the museum closed on March 14 due to the COVID-19 threat, then briefly reopened before battening down the hatches again after low attendance, museum co-founder Doug Pope said. Reopening again October, they average about 10 visitors on a reduced schedule of three days a week.
