My priority is not to answer questions, it is to listen; to hear your opinions, to hear your suggestions; and of course, to be able to incorporate them in our thinking and policies. But first, please allow me to say a few words about the past year and what it has meant for progress on women’s rights and gender equality. We are seeing new evidence almost every day that the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for women’s rights – and particularly the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized: poor women, women working in the informal economy, and indigenous women.

Rashidat: Human Rights Lawyer in Nigeria

Description Rashidat Mohammed is a Nigerian human rights lawyer and barrister who provides free legal services to vulnerable groups, especially women and children who have experienced violence. She’s the only woman to have opened a law firm in three states in northwest Nigeria and is a staunch advocate of the rights of women and children. Rashidat is an active member of FIDA (the International Federation of Women Lawyers) Nigeria, which receives supports from the Spotlight Initiative – a global partnership between the European Union and United Nations agencies. Maria , 14, from the city of Nampula, is a survivor of sexual violence. After she was raped, with the support of her uncle she contacted Ophenta, a civil society organization. An activist accompanied her to a one-stop centre for survivors of violence (CAI), where she could access health, psychosocial, legal and police services all at once.
