According to a 2014 study by the League of American Orchestras, less than 2 percent of musicians in the approximately 800 orchestras surveyed were Black. The lack of Black representation in classical music nationwide traces back to barriers to high-quality music education and a lack of representation in programming. Isabelle Sarraf was named the next editor in chief of The Daily Northwestern, the paper’s publisher announced Tuesday night. Sarraf, a Medill junior, is currently a print managing editor and a diversity and inclusion chair for The Daily. Northwestern will require students to be fully vaccinated for the 2021-22 academic year. Faculty, staff and visitors will not be required to get the vaccine, Provost Kathleen Hagerty announced in a Wednesday community email. Students who cannot provide proof of their vaccination status and have not received an exemption may not be eligible to register.
When Northwestern named Mike Polisky its next athletic director on Monday, some faculty members moved to organize.
Six professors co-signed a Wednesday open letter to Provost Kathleen Hagerty, calling on the University to increase transparency in the selection process.
“The hiring of Polisky… signals a troubling continuity in Athletic Department leadership that, while successful in some areas, failed the University and its students in significant ways,” the letter stated. “We are alarmed by this decision and, indeed, embarrassed on behalf of the university.”
Polisky was named a defendant in a federal lawsuit filed by a former cheerleader earlier this year. In the suit, Weinberg senior Hayden Richardson alleged that Polisky failed to appropriately address complaints filed about sexual harassment. Additionally, in an investigation from The Daily, multiple sources claimed that Polisky did not take allegations of anti-Black racism within the cheer team seriously.
Evanston Township High School ranked 41st in Illinois by US News
Evanston Township High School was ranked one of the best high schools in the nation in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools report.
ETHS was ranked 41st in Illinois and 827th in the nation, receiving a score of 95.37 out of 100 on the national rankings scorecard.
The report ranks around 18,000 public high schools across 50 states and the District of Columbia based on state testing scores, college-level exams, and graduation rates.
College readiness, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates were the indicators used to determine rankings.
