Tracy Bettencourt, blind artist, teaches Clarksville to paint in the dark

Editor s note: Do you know a Clarksville native or resident we should feature next Sunday in That s So Clarksville? Contact news director Gary Estwick at 931-245-0282. He also can be reached at gestwick@gannett.com and on Twitter @garyestwick. Tracy Bettencourt runs her hands across various sizes of stretched canvas, creating bold and swirling techniques, brilliant colors and shapes that morph into art she’ll never see. Her world is black. But not dark. Bettencourt, the artist behind artwork currently on display at Artlink in Strawberry Alley, lost her sight 14 years ago to retinitis pigmentosa. It was only then that she taught herself how to paint, her way of refusing to let her condition win.

Women s History Month: Portrait project Women of Clarksville celebrates locals

Clarksville Now CLARKSVILLE, TN – Women’s History Month, a month set aside each year to highlight the contributions of women in history and contemporary society, will be celebrated a bit differently this March in Clarksville. Women of Clarksville, a community-powered portrait project, will launch March 4 in downtown Clarksville, highlighting 16 local women who work each day to improve Clarksville within their sphere of influence. “In a time where our social and political landscape feels very divisive, I felt inspired to create something within my own sphere of influence that could inspire unity,” Brittany Bowen, project creator, said. Bowen moved to Clarksville in 2019 and immediately immersed herself in the local arts scene. She has a degree in photography and teaches art classes for the Austin Peay State University Community School for the Arts.

Curbside pickup parking spaces to continue in downtown Clarksville

Clarksville Now CLARKSVILLE, TN – Clarksville Parking Commission will permanently designate four downtown parking spaces – two on Strawberry Alley and two on Franklin Street – for curbside pickup of goods ordered from downtown businesses. Last year, to help restaurants cope with occupancy restrictions designed to limit the spread of coronavirus, six parking spaces were designated as curbside pickup zones. Recently, even as some occupancy restrictions have eased and businesses are seeing more customer visits, the Commission decided to return two spaces to metered parking and permanently dedicate four spaces to pickup. The Commission also voted to meter four additional spaces at the corner of Main and North Second streets. The addition of these six metered spaces comes at the request of area businesses to increase opportunities for downtown visitors and customers.
