Local business owner opens Staten Island-themed Etsy shop during pandemic

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y Since Renee Sarno, 31, owner of Yaymaker a paint-and-sip franchise can only hold virtual paint classes during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, she had some spare time to put her creative talents to use.
Utilizing materials gathered for her paint-and-sip classes, the West Brighton resident developed a line of Staten Island-themed items from sweatshirts and hats, to coasters and notepads and opened an Etsy store called NYCrafts And The City.
“When I had to make the shift to virtual art events with Yaymaker, I realized I still have a garage full of craft supplies, and I also needed my own way to decompress during the pandemic,” said Sarno. “Especially in the beginning of the pandemic, when I didn’t know what would happen to my Yaymaker business, I needed to keep going as much as I could. They gathered in private homes, an American Legion post, and even the basement of a bank. For 16 new Staten Islanders back in 1965, prayer, not the meeting place, mattered most.
They would become the first congregants of today’s Gateway Church in Richmond Valley, inspired by a charismatic young minister destined to be a force in the borough’s spiritual community.
The Rev. Dr. Daniel Mercaldo, 81, Gateway’s founder and senior pastor for more than five decades who dedicated his life to helping others navigate challenges and celebrate successes, died Jan. 7 in NCH Baker Hospital, Naples, Fla.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Thomas J. Hall readily admits that he didn’t have dreams of growing up and becoming a lawyer.
“When I went to Georgetown undergrad, I started in the business school. However, during my junior year, I took a Constitutional Law course, which I loved,” recalled Hall. “I went on to attend Vermont Law School, found my passion, and never looked back.”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Years prior to a horrific crash that left a beloved Staten Island business owner paralyzed, she described herself in an Advance/SILive.com interview as a “tenacious” person who “strives to be better.”
