Survivors of the Stolen Generations in the NT and ACT will get up to $75,000 each for the suffering inflicted on them by forcibly removing them from their families, after the federal government reversed its opposition to a compensation scheme.
The $378.6 million scheme will run for four years beginning next March and will be open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were taken by government, church, or welfare groups.
Mr Wyatt said the payments go towards acknowledging the wrongs of the past.

The country’s top Indigenous organisations have applauded the federal government’s $1.1 billion Closing the Gap implementation plan, but warn underfunding of programs and services remains the biggest challenge ahead.
The federal, state, and territory governments reached the historic new National Agreement on Closing the Gap with the Coalition of Peaks last July, aimed at reducing the inequality faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Australia’s government has pledged $813 million to address Indigenous disadvantage, including compensation to thousands of mixed-race children who were taken from their families.
A redress scheme announced on August 5 will see victims of the Stolen Generations from NT, ACT and Jervis Bay Territory receive compensation payments and free counselling.
