Selecting a single Person of the Year for 2021 has been particularly challenging because so many Islanders reached beyond their own households to help others.
We salute all those who stepped up, day after day, and continue to do so, as we move toward an end to the pandemic in 2021 and a return to some semblance of normal life.
But one very unassuming person stood out, because of efforts made during the pandemic, and his previous contributions to the community that he has called home all his life.

As the annual holiday festivities subsided with the start of January, business began to return to normal across the North Fork. On. Jan. 1,at the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead, newly elected town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar spoke of her commitment to the “health, welfare and safety of our residents.”
In Southold Town, a standing-room-only audience packed into Town Hall as Supervisor Scott Russell, and councilwomen Jill Doherty and Sarah Nappa took their oaths of office. Soon after, the new board began discussing issues at hand, such as the future of “McMansions.”

On Sept. 9, a group of health care workers at Peconic Bay Medical Center gathered in front of the hospital as the northern portion of Roanoke Avenue was officially renamed 1 Heroes Way.
It was a fitting tribute to the health care workers who, for six months prior, were on the front lines of a pandemic that still rages on.
“We recognize … not just what was performed heroically in the four walls of this building by you and so many of your colleagues, but also all of our first responders and essential workers,” Andy Mitchell, president and CEO of PBMC, said during a ceremony that morning.
