Abortion. The sanctity of human life. How did society, laws, attitudes – how did we get here? These are questions the movie
Based on the real-life court case of the same name, the film presents the players and facts to which you may have never been introduced. In just under two hours, viewers are led through the drama which unfolded around the landmark case as the script ambitiously attempts to wade through dry legal procedures while bringing life to key players in the story.
Dr. Alveda King is herself a key player in bringing
Roe v. Wade to fruition. Dr. King not only serves as executive producer, she also appears as Guthrie Jefferson, the loving mother and encourager to the film’s main character Dr. Mildred Jefferson (Stacey Dash). Dr. King’s acting repertoire adds to the list of her other accomplishments, including activism, author, and former state representative for the 28th District in the Georgia House of Representatives. Also a niece of civil rights leader Martin
In the early 90s, we didn’t have Starbucks and
Pearl Jam was still known as Mookie Blaylock. Huh? We didn’t use the Internet for everything (yet), and AOL was king. Google wasn’t even invented until 1998 (though didn’t officially become a verb until 2006); instead, we had Ask Jeeves, Alta Vista, Netscape, Lycos, Earthlink, MindSpring, or Yahoo (among others) to search the mysterious, new World Wide Web.
We also saw the birth of email, or Email, or e-mail, or E-mail; yes, it took a while until we settled on a universally accepted spelling for the abbreviation for electronic mail. AOL Instant Messenger was the first chat-like service to exist in the mainstream and it was life-changing. We could chat friends and make plans to go to happy hour after work right from our work computers without ever picking up the phone. We loved it.
Audiences might suspect
Roe v. Wade, which sheds inconvenient truths about the abortion movement, is aimed at a pro-life demographic.
You’d be wrong, according to the film’s driving force, Nick Loeb.
Trotting out a long line of crooked, pro-choice characters would “alienate that audience,” Loeb says. “Most of them are not bad people … that’s the audience we’re hoping for.”
Roe v. Wade finds Loeb wearing a crush of creative hats. He plays Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a pro-choice advocate who eventually had an extreme change of heart regarding abortion. His story is part of a larger canvas the country wrestling with the Supreme Court case known as Roe v. Wade. He’s also the co-writer, co-producer and co-director along with Cathy Allyn.
