WNBA: Mystics have more cap flexibility after Sanders retirement

Photo by David Becker/NBAE via Getty Images Yesterday, the Washington Mystics announced that LaToya Sanders retired from the WNBA but will remain with Monumental Sports & Entertainment in a general player development capacity. The move was a surprise, and given that they also signed Theresa Plaisance yesterday, it’s always a good thing to take a step back and see where the team is after such moves. Here are three takeaways on where the Mystics are at this point. No. 1: The frontcourt rotation seems clearer. The Mystics’ frontcourt currently has Elena Delle Donne, Tina Charles, Myisha Hines-Allen, Erica McCall and Plaisance. It’s pretty clear that Delle Donne will get a starting role and major minutes while Hines-Allen and Charles will also get starter-level minutes. McCall and Plaisance have been reserves for their careers and will likely be in a similar role this season.

Health unit preparing to open several immunization clinics across the region

BARRIE It was another busy day at the vaccine clinic on Sperling Drive in Barrie on Wednesday afternoon as dozens of frontline workers lined up waiting to roll up their sleeves. According to Operations Lead Stella Johnson, the clinic is seeing up to a thousand patients a day. That s means about a hundred and ten to a hundred and twenty people per hour, she said outside of the clinic on Wednesday. Most people getting their vaccine at this clinic are long-term care staff, health care workers, and now - first responders, including paramedics. Simcoe County Paramedic Chief Andrew Robert says on Friday, he learned his employees would be receiving the vaccine. By Wednesday, about 70 per cent of Simcoe County s paramedics had received their first dose.

WNBA Free Agency 2021: Mystics will be one of several title contenders

Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images We made it through one week of WNBA free agency signings. The Washington Mystics have made many moves in this time so let’s recap their journey below. The Mystics re-signed some of their key players like Tina Charles and LaToya Sanders. They also signed Alysha Clark who was a key part of last season’s Seattle Storm’s championship team and acquired Erica McCall in a sign-and-trade deal with the Minnesota Lynx. However, some of Washington’s unrestricted free agents have also signed elsewhere, largely due to cap space restrictions. Aerial Powers has agreed to sign with the Lynx though the team hasn’t announced it as of Tuesday, Feb. 9. Tianna Hawkins signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Dream. Ultimately, who is left for Washington to sign, what are the next steps and how good could this Mystics team be?

WNBA Free Agency 2021: Mystics UFAs include Meesseman, Powers, Charles

Photo by Stephen Gosling/NBAE via Getty Images Today, the WNBA enters its free agency negotiation period. Teams can negotiate with any unrestricted free agents they would like, but they can’t sign contracts until Feb. 1. Earlier this month, teams could give qualifying offers and core players who would otherwise be unrestricted free agents. The Washington Mystics re-signed Sug Sutton, Jacki Gemelos and Stella Johnson this past week. But given the timing, they were all probably given those offers, a non-guaranteed training camp contract, as Gabe Ibrahim noted. The Mystics of course are looking to save their powder for free agency and bring back most, if not all of their key players from their 2019 championship team. How do things look?
