Travel search engine Kayak, part of the Booking Holdings portfolio, has entered the brick-and-mortar hospitality space, unveiling plans to open the Kayak Miami Beach hotel this April. Kayak is making the move in partnership with Life House, a New York-based hotel brand and management group that currently operates over 20 properties globally, including four Life House-branded hotels across the Miami, Nantucket and Denver markets. Located along the Collins Canal at 2216 Park Ave., the 52-room Kayak Miami Beach will be housed within an art deco building that was constructed in 1934. The property was previously home to the Life House Collins Park hotel.

Kayak Moves Into Hotels by Opening Miami Beach Property in Partnership With Life House

More travel executives get their mission-critical industry news from Skift than any other source on the planet.Tell me more Travel-comparison site Kayak is launching into a new business, a 52-room tech-forward hotel in Miami Beach in partnership with Life House. The Kayak Miami Beach, which was a Life House property that was a victim of the pandemic-induced travel collapse, will serve as a test lab for a Kayak-developed software package for independent hotels with the pitch being that it would capture all of the travel demand that Kayak can generate. The property, according to Kayak co-founder and CEO Steve Hafner, would offer guests contactless check-ins and checkouts through the Kayak app, a trend that is hardly revolutionary. There would also be 24-hour access to hotel staff and support through the app, as well as amenities such as smart TVs and Marshall speakers.

Kayak Is Opening a Miami Beach Hotel | Travel + Leisure

The new Kayak Miami Beach will serve as an innovation lab for technologies like touchless check in, digital door locks, and a robust mobile app that will let guests connect with hotel staff virtually through their phones. (No more calling downstairs for more towels!) This is Kayak s first hotel launch, says Steve Hafner, the CEO of Kayak, in an email to Travel + Leisure. It s something we have been thinking about for a couple years and COVID-19 has accelerated the need for innovation for independent hotels. [It s] one of our top 10 search destinations, it s a fun market for us and for anyone to enjoy year round, he said. We found a beautiful building in a great neighborhood that fit our vision; we want this to be a locally rooted experience.

4 Takeaways From Skift's Online Travel and Distribution Summit

More travel executives get their mission-critical industry news from Skift than any other source on the planet.Tell me more Many travel companies that have survived the pandemic have used the pause as an opportunity to reinvent themselves, or at least to launch new product lines that they may or may not have contemplated before masks and hand sanitizer became required accessories. That was one of the four takeaways from Skift’s Online Travel and Distribution Summit, which took place in a virtual event on February 17. Pandemic-Era Product Innovation Saying Certares raised more money for investing in the last year than it has in the past eight, founder and senior managing director Greg O’Hara announced that the private equity firm, with huge investments in travel, is looking at more real estate investments.
