Steve Wallace: Little things make big difference in safety

Vehicles are parked along the Oak Bay avenue, a flat road that requires no safety precautions for parking. When parking on a steep hill, however, drivers must turn the wheels the appropriate way before exiting the vehicle, write Steve Wallace. TIMES COLONIST Every driver should be paying attention to the little things. Sadly, many are not thinking of the less-than-obvious safety behaviours. One example is a safe street parking plan on hills. Turning the vehicle wheels the appropriate way, should be second nature. Drivers should turn them away from the street, except when parking uphill with an obstructive curb. If a parked vehicle is bumped or has a brake failure, the turn of the wheels should take it away from moving traffic. The uphill park with a right-angle significant curb height, is enough to stop a bumped or runaway vehicle. This execution is required on an initial driving test in most every province in our country. Why do so many drivers fail to follow this simple safety

Humor and healing: Laughter for the body and soul

Humor and healing: Laughter for the body and soul Mental health experts say finding humor during a health crisis is a way to cope Published:  Tags:  INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Ivanhoe Newswire) – There are very few phrases more gut wrenching than “You have cancer.” The fear of the unknown can leave you reeling. What treatment will I need? Will I have side effects? Will I survive? Mental health experts say for some, finding humor during a health crisis is one important way to cope. Two years ago, Diana Bosse went to the ER with intense abdominal pain and was blindsided by the doctor’s diagnosis, diffuse large b-cell lymphoma.

West Island teen launches RACE WITH ME campaign with 1,000 participants

West Island teen Jesse Briscoe along with Canadian track star Andre De Grasse are inviting Canadian kids coast-to-coast to join in on a Virtual Challenge called “RACE WITH ME”. Young Canadians are encouraged through the campaign to hit their local tracks from May 1 to June 25, for a 400-meter run. Participants are then encouraged to go back weekly to improve their run time. Family members from the same household can record times and capture photos and videos to be shared online. Net proceeds from donations will go to youth mental health charities, such as Kids Help Phone, through the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation.

Letters May 11: In lieu of a loo; gold-rush buildings have stories to tell

At the beginning of the pandemic, security concerns prevailed downtown as people living on the streets suddenly had no access to shelter or municipal washrooms and tried to access private facilities. In addition, the ongoing requirements for extra sanitization are time consuming, costly and an increased health risk for staff (and really, would require a full time bathroom attendant for busier places). I would suggest that one should assume there will be no washroom and plan ahead. Go to the toilet before you leave the house. Eat or drink after you run errands. Have things delivered if you must always be near a bathroom. Call ahead to inquire about facilities if you have a special medical need and the trip is unavoidable.
