Can Fort Payne afford to have a railroad overpass?

Without the railroad, Fort Payne would not have become a boom town. Although critically important to the nation’s supply chain, trains have become more of a disruption to traffic flow in 2021. A few Saturdays ago, one train disconnected from the cars it was pulling in at least two places, blocking every crossing in Fort Payne between 20th Street NE and 22nd Street SE. Fort Payne Mayor Brian Baine said he knew there was a problem when he heard the train slow to a stop from his home. This raised alarm among some speculating on Facebook that such a blockage might cost someone’s life if an ambulance is unable to cross in a scenario where seconds count. Furthermore, four of the city’s schools are located on the east side of the railway.

Alabama Legislature OKs permanent daylight saving time measure

The Alabama Legislature won t let anyone steal their sunshine. The Alabama House of Representatives voted 93-1 Thursday for legislation sponsored by Sen. Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, that would put the state on permanent daylight saving time, if authorized by Congress. Rep. Mary Moore, D-Birmingham, cast the only no vote. The bill goes to Gov. Kay Ivey. The Alabama Senate approved the bill 29-0 on April 20. The measure attracted little criticism in the House, but was subject to an hourlong debate due to disagreements over a proposed gambling bill and more controversial bills on the House agenda.  Daylight saving time is mandated by federal law, and only a change in federal law would allow states to move to year-round DST. A measure to allow states to make the shift was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in January. It had not moved as of Friday morning.

Rogers named to Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees

Rogers most recently has been leading the business development efforts at Farmers Telecommunications in Rainsville. “I have known Dus for 30 plus years and consider him not only a colleague but a friend,” said State Sen. Steve Livingston. “Dus and I worked closely together during his time and president and CEO at the Jackson County Economic Development Authority and now in his most recent role as business development manager at Farmerstel.” Livingston said Rogers exhibits exceptional leadership skills, and thanks to Rogers, many industries now call Jackson County home, including Google. “I have no doubt that Dus will provide exceptional leadership on the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees,” added Livingston. “He will continue to represent North Alabama well and will serve the community college system with integrity.”
