Letter to the editor: We should work harder to close Maine s pregnancy care gap

Letter to the editor: We should work harder to close Maine’s pregnancy care gap Share Re: The front-page May 9 Maine Sunday Telegram article “Maine has glaring race disparity in care during pregnancies”: Fifty years ago, I did my Bates thesis on essentially this subject, focusing on the high infant mortality of Blacks versus whites. I posited that this was because of the high cost of health care, and the socioeconomic differences that existed then. Twenty-five years later, The New York Times ran a front-page article saying that a major study had found this to be true. Now, another 25 years later, the same problem still exists. Wreck of early Barrow submarine HMS DI given protected status

The wreck of an early British submarine that was built in Barrow has been given protected status. Known as HMS/m D1, it was the forerunner to the Royal Navy’s patrol submarines and saw service during the First World War. Built by Vickers, it was the secret prototype for the D-class, the Royal Navy’s first diesel-powered submarines. It now lies off the coast of Devon. Launched in 1908 and commissioned in September 1909, the D-class was a significant development on the C-class submarine, being larger and more powerful. At the outbreak of war in 1914, the submarine was assigned to protecting the coast of Dover from enemy invasion and a year later relegated to training duties.
