Qualcomm’s battle-tested CEO Steve Mollenkopf to step down; President Cristiano Amon taking over [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
Qualcomm Chief Executive Steve Mollenkopf, who guided the San Diego wireless technology firm through a tumultuous five-year stretch of legal attacks on its business model, layoffs and a failed hostile takeover attempt, announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of June.
Mollenkopf, 52, will be replaced by Qualcomm’s second- in-command President Cristiano Amon. Since joining Qualcomm in 1995, Amon led the company’s efforts to expand its footprint with Chinese smartphone makers and spearheaded its work on 5G wireless technologies.

Qualcomm Incorporated announced today that Cristiano Amon who is currently the President of the company will succeed Steve Mollenkopf as CEO, effective June 3 0, 2021.
Amon was unanimously selected for the position by Qualcomm’s Board of Directors and will succeed Mollenkopf who is set to retire following 26 years with the company. Mollenkopf will continue as a strategic advisor with Qualcomm for a period of time, the company said in a press release.
Mollenkopf, 52, became CEO of the company in March, 2014. He has been one of the driving forces behind the company’s push to 5G. He also oversaw the expansion into new industry segments such as the Internet of Things (IoT), RF Front End and Automotive and was “instrumental” in the company’s rise as a smartphone technology supplier.

Yesterday, the mobile phone chipset maker Qualcomm announced that the company’s current Chief Executive Steve Mollenkopf would step down in June. Mollenkopf was promoted from president to CEO in 2014 and led Qualcomm through an unprecedented period that has seen the company capitalize on booming smartphone sales as it battled one of its most important customers, Apple Inc.
After he steps down, the boards of members have unanimously decided to hand over the reins to Cristiano Amon. However, Mollenkopf is to remain as an advisor to the new CEO for a certain period.
