Investigation alleges worker abuse on South Korean fishing vessels exporting to US, EU By Share An investigation by the Advocate for Public Interest Law (APIL) and the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) has found that migrant workers onboard South Korea’s distant-water fishing fleet – which fishes for products eventually shipped to the U.S., European Union, and United Kingdom – are subject to abuse. Greenpeace, EJF urge Western buyers to pressure Taiwan to tighten its fishing regulations

Greenpeace, EJF urge Western buyers to pressure Taiwan to tighten its fishing regulations By Share Taiwan has the second-largest long-distance fleet in the world, and plays a central role in the international supply chain for fisheries products. But in recent years, its distant-water fleet has been accused of human rights offenses, tainting its reputation. According to Greenpeace and other NGOs concerned with labor issues in the global fishing industry, Taiwan’s tuna-fishing firms, and major Western buyers, aren’t doing enough to stamp out long-running abuses taking place in the Taiwanese tuna fleet. Greenpeace has pursued a multi-year campaign to persuade FCF Co., a Taiwan-based business and the largest tuna trader in the world, to make reforms, but its progress has not been adequate, according to Greenpeace East Asia Ocean Campaign Director Pearl (Peiyu) Chen.

Broken Axle opens at Appalachian Outpost

LYBURN — With just over one month in business, a new Logan County restaurant with 20 craft beers on tap has been a hit with local residents. Located in the space once occupied by Shoe Show at the old Rita Mall at Lyburn, The Broken Axle is one of the first of several planned businesses to open as part of the Appalachian Outpost, a development that has repurposed the old mall location. The Broken Axle is owned by Leah Vance and Fuji Williams, who have a 3-year-old son together named Aksel, hence the name of their business. Vance, a photographer and the daughter of Appalachian Outpost owner and incoming Logan County Commissioner Diana Barnette, is no stranger to business.
