WARREN Cindee Mines is tired of seeing local history disappear one building at a time. The Champion resident and Trumbull County Historical Society board member is trying to raise opposition to the proposed demolition of a historic house at 326 N. Park Ave. “If there’s an outcry like with the trees (cut down) by the Kinsman House (in 2019), maybe there’s someone else who would step up and save it,” Mines said.

Dr. John Johnson sees promise in what others have abandoned. Alecto Healthcare Services closed East Ohio Regional Hospital in 2019. Johnson bought it. Just last week, the facility reopened its doors. Johnson also bought the landmark Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel building in downtown Wheeling, which had been vacant for years. He’ll work with developer Steve Coon to turn it into a new apartment building, with the city constructing a new parking facility close by. The total project will be as much as a $31 million investment in the city’s future. Too often in recent years, the Ohio Valley has seen businesses and people depart, seeking fortune elsewhere while the people who remain try to fill the holes left in the community.

Planned Lofts Big Plus for Wheeling | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 16, 2021 It’s only two weeks into the new year, and city officials in Wheeling should call an abrupt end to 2021. Right now, it doesn’t appear as if things can get much better with two major announcements already taking place. We reported earlier this month on the proposal by Bluefield State College to utilize a portion of the former Ohio Valley Medical Center for an engineering program, which could bring several hundred students to Center Wheeling. That was followed a few days later by a project that city leaders and developer Steve Coon have been working to announce for nearly three years: redevelopment of the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. downtown headquarters, the Schmulbach Building on Market Street, into loft apartments.
