Letters: So is there any level of pain that would be too much for the SNP?

FULL marks to Iain Macwhirter for his excellent column on the new landscape which those who support Scottish independence must now face ( Voters will twig that Sturgeon is kidding about indyref2 , The Herald, April 28). In the light of these new circumstances, it is now incumbent on nationalists, foremost amongst them Nicola Sturgeon, to be interrogated on their plans to move forward. A good start would be for her to be clear what levels of economic hardship or social hardship would or would not be acceptable to her. Her red lines clearly do not exclude a hard border and massive friction to Scottish trade with rUK, and it would appear she would accept any conditions for entry to the EU without asking Scottish voters if they agree.

Priti Patel blasted for immoral dawn raids on asylum seekers

Priti Patel blasted for ‘immoral’ dawn raids on Scottish asylum seekers A group of MPs have written to the Home Secretary following a dawn raid on an asylum-seeking family which left a pensioner in hospital. The eight SNP MPs – all seven Glasgow representatives along with the MP for Cumbernauld – have criticised the practise and say it is ‘immoral’ and an infringement of human rights. It comes after a raid on a home in the north of Glasgow on April 23, where enforcement officers reportedly threatened a family with deportation. They are believed to have lived in the UK for four and a half years, after fleeing from Pakistan amid a forced marriage attempt.

Behind the secret rise in nuclear weapons on the Clyde by UK Government

THE UK Government has secretly boosted the number of Trident nuclear warheads stored on the Clyde over the last five years, according to an analysis of bomb convoys. Nukewatch, which monitors the transport of nuclear weapons, estimated that 37 new warheads were delivered from England to Scotland between 2015 and 2020. Nine were added in 2019 and 13 in 2020, it said. In March the Ministry of Defence (MoD) reversed a 10-year-old disarmament plan by announcing the “ceiling” on the UK’s nuclear weapons stockpile would increase from 225 to 260 because of “technological and doctrinal threats”. But Nukewatch argued this increase has already happened without the public being told. It accused Westminster of failing to provide a “fully accurate picture” and of risking “catastrophic consequences”.

The Russian authorities have categorically dismissed the accusations. Former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond has been accused of spinning Russian propaganda by fellow MPs following his remarks about the Salisbury poisonings. During an interview on the BBC, the politician was asked whether he thinks the Kremlin was behind the alleged chemical attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in England.
