Decentralization, Absolutism, and the Papal States

Decentralization, Absolutism, and the Papal States by David Kertzer Historian David Kertzer made a name for himself with his 1997 book  The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara. The book covers the until then rarely mentioned case of an Italian Jewish boy who was illicitly baptized by the housekeeper, and then kidnapped in 1858 by Papal State authorities on the grounds that Jews in the Papal States could not be permitted to raise a Christian child. Because so few books or in-depth articles have been written on the topic in English, Kertzer now enjoys a position as perhaps the preeminent expert on the case. This is no small thing since a number of filmmakers including Steven Spielberg have expressed interest in dramatizing the Mortara case on film. The film project explicitly based on Kertzer’s book was still moving forward as of February of this year.1

Black and Latinx Surgeons Continue to Hit Glass Ceiling in America

Black and Latinx Surgeons Continue to Hit Glass Ceiling in America 05/05/2021 | 11:00am EDT Send by mail : Message : Required fields Richmond, VA, May 05, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Among the upper echelons of academic surgery, Black and Latinx representation has remained flat over the past six years, according to a study published today in JAMA Surgery by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center and University of Florida Health. The study tracked trends across more than 15,000 faculty in surgery departments across the U.S. between 2013-2019. Although the data revealed modest diversity gains among early-career faculty during this period, especially for Black and Latina women, the percentage of full professors and department chairs identifying as Black or Latinx continued to hover in the single digits.

Bottle shop plans near train station rejected - Bayside News

Bottle shop plans near train station rejected PLANS for a bottle shop on Young Street near the train station have been shot down. The shop was planned for 88 Young Street, directly across the road from the Frankston train station entrance. The proposal to sell liquor at the shop was put to Frankston councillors at their 9 March meeting. A permit was rejected with a 7-2 vote. The proposal put to councillors read that liquor would have been sold at the shop from Monday to Sunday, 11am – 7.30pm. A report prepared by Frankston Council officers read that “Victoria Police have objected to the application” because “the area attracts a large number of police calls for assistance with over half these calls for antisocial behaviour and over a quarter of these calls are for reports of assault. A key driver for this demand for police service is the misuse and abuse of alcohol.”
