Police find meth, invasive snails after high-speed chase

ONTARIO A woman from Utah was arrested on several charges Wednesday evening, following a high-speed chase, which resulted in police confiscating methamphetamine and snails. According to a brief on the situation provided from Ontario Police Chief Steven Romero, Anastasia Dickey, 33, of Utah was initially pulled over in Fruitland. When police asked her to get out of the vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, she fled the scene instead. Police say Dickey left Fruitland and headed west on Interstate 84, reaching speeds of 92 miles per hour. She turned off at exit 374, going toward Loves, then onto Washington Avenue and North Oregon Street, slowing down in the city, where Ontario Police Department took over the pursuit.

Justus ejected from meeting for disruption

ONTARIO Former City Councilor Marty Justus was removed from an Ontario City Council meeting on May 18, following his public comments, and the request of a current councilor to review what was written on the signs. Justus has been attending council meetings with his signs for the past several meetings. Councilor John Kirby called for the point of order, asking to clarify what actions would constitute a disruption by an audience member and warrant being censured by the meeting’s “presiding officer,” who is the mayor, as it pertained to potentially slanderous remarks being presented by Justus. “Mr. Justus is now communicating with the council, he needs to stop or be removed from this council,” stated Kirby.

Former ordinance officer speaks out on ordinance overhaul

ONTARIO Ontario City Council had many speakers during the public comments portion of its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night, with the majority speaking about fines regarding ordinance violations. It is noteworthy that one of those speakers was former Dallas Brockett, former Ontario Code Enforcement Officer. He started by saying he wanted to discuss code enforcement. “I know there’s been a little bit of talk about not refilling my position when I left,” said Brockett. He said that decision was made by Ontario Police Chief Steven Romero. Brockett went on to say he also wanted to discuss “undoing everything [he] worked so hard on to try to accomplish and make this city cleaner.”

Peace officers Memorial BBQ canceled

ONTARIO In a message to the Argus on Monday, Ontario City Council president Freddy Rodriguez announced the city’s Peace Officers Memorial BBQ planned for Friday has been canceled. The barbecue was initially supposed to be held in conjunction with the hydrant paint event slated for this coming Saturday as a means to honor peace officers from the local area who had fallen in the line of duty. Rodriguez first brought the idea up to the council during an April 8 work session, encouraging the council, mayor and city staff to attend, along with police officers and stating he would seek input from the police department as to how to commemorate local officers as a means of showing positive action in the city.

The Green Issue: Environmental Justice Initiative Educates About Environmental Racism

A recent study by Yale University’s Climate Change Communication program found that Latino and Black Americans are more likely to be alarmed or concerned about climate change than whites.   “The environmental sector suffers from an alarming amount of whiteness,” says Patrick King, the sustainability education manager of local nonprofit Urban Green Lab. “There’s a perception that it’s a space only for affluent white folks, when in reality, when you look at the numbers, the overwhelming majority of people who believe in climate change and believe that things have to be done around climate change are Black and brown.”
