Biz leaders: Inoculate all Filipinos first before opening up borders

SunStar + May 25, 2021 WHILE other nations are already eyeing to open their borders to vaccinated tourists, business leaders in Cebu said the region should focus on reviving its tourism industry first through domestic tourists. This is because the country, specifically Central Visayas, has yet to fully vaccinate its population and the threat to Covid-19 is still present. “Let’s concentrate first on our vaccine program. This is the only way to get out of this pandemic. Let’s start with our local travel bubble because we can now see the opening of our local destinations for us to go around during weekends. This is already a healthy sign,” Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Felix Taguiam said.

Business leaders to workers: Register for Covid vaccination

SunStar + May 17, 2021 CEBU’S business community has welcomed the ramping up of the Covid-19 vaccination efforts for essential and economic workers slated next month. Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Felix Taguiam said the constant arrival of the vaccines and the continued vaccination rollout spell the resumption of economic activities in Cebu. “Let’s all cooperate. This is the only way to open up more of our economy as we are really seeing the downward trend. Let’s not be complacent, and we have to respect each other by doing the minimum safety health protocols,” he said. As the Department of Health and the local government units are ramping up the vaccination program, Taguiam said the Project Balik Buhay (PBB) is encouraging the private companies to stir up more of their employees to be vaccinated, and for cause-oriented groups like the Cebu Citizens’ Initiative to beef up information awareness even at the grassroots level.

Biz leaders back Foreign Investment Act, say crucial to job, economic recovery

SunStar + May 03, 2021 CEBU business leaders are in favor of easing restrictions on foreign investments as this will help in the country’s efforts to resuscitate the economy. Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Steven Yu said while this would result in competition among local players it will open up more opportunities in terms of employment generation, upskilling of workers and innovation among business owners. “It is a step in the right direction, to diversify our economy from over-reliance on overseas Filipino remittances and business process management (BPM), especially now that tourism is on the back burner due to the pandemic,” said Yu.

Vaccine best way to lift CV economy

SunStar + April 30, 2021 BUSINESS leaders in Cebu have reiterated their appeal to speed up the Covid-19 vaccination rollout and urged businesses to invest in other industries like manufacturing and tourism following the drastic decline of Central Visayas’ economic performance in 2020. Region 7 ended the pandemic year of 2020 with its worst economic performance of negative 9.9 percent growth. Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Steven Yu noted that because Cebu is an economy propped up by service and service-related industries, it cannot survive on a new normal based on restricting social and human interactions. “That is why we need to get vaccinated soon. Let us continue to hope and pray that we will sustain this modified general community quarantine while we do our vaccinations. This is our only hope for exiting this pandemic-induced economic maelstrom,” he said.
