Sometime around noon on the day after George Floyd died while pleading for breath under a police officer s knee, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo summoned his top staff to a meeting in his office.
He told them that he was leaning toward firing the officer, Derek Chauvin, and three of his colleagues who were involved in Floyd s arrest, but that he wanted a second opinion before any decision, according to interviews and documents describing the nature of the meeting obtained by the Star Tribune.
In terminating the officers less than 24 hours after Floyd s death, Arradondo moved more quickly and decisively than his predecessors, who in some cases waited weeks or months to discipline officers for alleged misconduct and even then only after intense public pressure.

Canadian pot sales expected to slow down in Q1 due to COVID-19 lockdowns
As Canadian cannabis producers emerge from a volatile week of market activity, some dark clouds persist over the industry.
While earnings season has begun in earnest with companies like Canopy Growth Corp. and Supreme Cannabis Inc. reporting an increase in quarterly sales, the next three-month period may be a challenging one for Canada s pot retailers and producers.
Several analyst reports suggest that cannabis sales in January will be down notably from December, while some retailers expect the rest of the first quarter to offer another tough month as COVID-19 lockdowns weigh broadly across the industry.
Selling Canadian coffee shop Second Cup Coffee Co. will give Aegis Brands Inc. a stronger balance sheet to pursue future M&A in the cannabis retail sector, the head of the company said.
Aegis said in a release on Monday that it will sell Second Cup to Quebec-based Foodtastic Inc. for $14 million, plus a post-closing earn-out. There are 231 Second Cup outlets in Canada, according to the company s most recent quarterly report, 31 of which are corporate-owned.
The sale will mark the end of Second Cup s four-decade-long run as one of Canada s biggest independent coffee shop franchises. Second Cup has seen its market share dwindle in recent years amid the emergence of stronger competitors like Starbucks Inc., McDonalds Corp, and Restaurant Brands International Inc. s Tim Hortons.
