Dead by Daylight is getting colorblind mode in wake of developer controversy

Behaviour Interactive, the developers of Dead by Daylight, has announced that it will be adding a colorblind mode to the game. This comes at a time when it received a lot of backlash from the community for certain remarks made by one of the developers. In a tweet, Behavior Interactive mentions that the colorblind mode, which is slated to arrive shortly, will include accessibility settings for deuteranope (inability to perceive green light), protanope (inability to perceive red light), and tritanope (inability to perceive blue light). In a video that’s part of the tweet, the developer mentions that they hope to have the update ready for the next big chapter update. “Not the mid-chapter that’s coming, but the big update after that,” the dev says. “We can’t officially commit to a full date right now, but we’re hoping to have this release for the next chapter update.”

With over 25 million players signing up, Behaviour Interactive has now revealed a colourblind mode is on the way – though we wish it was arriving under better circumstances. Accessibility campaigners have requested this option for years, and this recent incident is regarding the Version 4.5.0 update. It hasn t gone live yet, but it ll make several changes to the HUD, which fans have criticised for being difficult to read if you re colourblind.

Dead by Daylight colorblind options on the way in upcoming updates

Creating accessibility for gamers with various disabilities has become an important part of modern gaming. By offering more accessibility, more players can engage in and have fun with the game on the same level. Behaviour Interactive isn’t necessarily at the forefront of this, and it seems to have come after some controversial statements from the staff, but some new options will open the game up to colorblind players that have issues with the game’s numerous indicators and alerts. Dead by Daylight Lead Programmer Ethan Amos Larson was apparently streaming the game on his personal Twitch when the matter came up in a question from a viewer. Allegedly, Larson went hard to the paint on the question.

Shacknews Person of the Year 2020 - Steven Spohn

The gaming world is often criticized, rightfully so, for being a toxic and exclusionary space. However, there are people that put all of their effort into making gaming more inclusive for everyone. One name that shines like a beacon of hope in the gaming community is that of Steven Spohn.  COO of the AbleGamers Charity, Steven Spohn has spent years raising awareness and speaking up for disabled people in the gaming community. This year, Spohn began a campaign to raise $1 million for the charity. His work was also enough to garner the attention of movie star Ryan Reynolds, who joined Spohn for a video message to spread support for AbleGamers.
