“I have received the letter from Dr Xavier via e-mail to state that he will now be an independent MP, ” said Azhar when contacted.
The letter addressed to Azhar from Dr Xavier stated that as of March 12, he will be a Perikatan Nasional-friendly independent MP.
“I, Datuk Dr Xavier Jayakumar, the MP of Kuala Langat, announce that as of March 12, I have decided to be an independent MP who will support the government bloc under the leadership of (Prime Minister) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, ” stated the letter signed by Dr Xavier and dated March 12.

Kota Kinabalu: Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau has waded into the claim that the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is using key institutions to shore up its razor-thin majority in Parliament.
Expressing his surprise over PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar leaving the party, the Tuaran MP also alleged that “more than 70 MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) officers from Kuala Lumpur had been deployed to Sabah”.
“I think the MACC officers are also going around meeting MPs. That’s all I know.
Datuk Xavier has declared his support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government as an independent.
Though he has been with PKR since its early days in 1998, Mr Xavier said he had grown extremely frustrated by events over the past year amid calls to hold an election, which he described as unnecessary during an ongoing pandemic. Our current priority should be to support the government in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, to create jobs, and to secure funds to rebuild the economy, he said in a statement.
