Political leaders vote in crucial general election
Article by July 26, 2021
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet cast his ballot on Monday urging St. Lucians to go and vote while exercising caution due to the protocols put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Chastanet, who is seeking a second consecutive term in office, is leading his United Workers Party (UWP) into the elections that political observers here say is a tight affair and could result in the possible formation of a coalition government.
His strongest challenge is coming from the main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP), which has nominated candidates for 15 of the 17 constituencies.

CASTRIES – The main opposition St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) was leading in most of the constituencies as counting continued following the general elections held here earlier on Monday.
Political strategist and director of the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES), Peter Wickham, speaking on television here, said that the results seem to show a “significantly greater swing that I had expected from the ruling party.
“As it stands now, the swing is in double digits and the United Workers Party (UWP) would have to do very well to try and contain that swing,” Wickham said, acknowledging that the SLP have been winning “in every singly constituency”.
