Tauranga has reached a crisis point with experts predicting housing shortfalls of up to 5000 and a $2.5 billion loss in GDP because of a legacy of underinvestment . The figures were discussed in a Tauranga City Council meeting yesterday as part of a public workshop in which council staff and commissioners discussed issues the city was facing as part of a draft Long-term Plan for 2021 - 2031.

The Western Bay s Omanawa Falls, which are currently closed to the public, could be in line for $3.5 million in funding from the Tauranga City Council.
But it will all depend on a meeting of Tauranga City commissioners.
The Tauranga City Council meets formally today for the second time since the city s elected members were discharged of their duties.
The commissioners - chairwoman Anne Tolley, Bill Wasley, Stephen Selwood and Shadrach Rolleston - were appointed to the role on February 9.
In the rearranged seats were commissioners Stephen Selwood, Shadrach Rolleston and Bill Wasley. The meeting coincided with the 10-year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquakes with Tolley paying respect to the dead. Business was conducted quickly, aided by not being bogged down in personal point-scoring, anecdotes or getting lost in minutiae. Those issues that arose with elected members. The main purpose was to receive an executive, ask questions of the administration and set a timeline for completion of the long term plan for 2021 to 2031. It was Minister of Local Government Nanaia Mahuta’s lack of faith in councillors to deliver a “robust and comprehensive” long term plan that led to her appointing commissioners to replace councillors.
