Rishi Sunak has warned the UK faces a “long and difficult” recovery from Covid-19, but insisted it is “beyond doubt” the UK Government’s economic plans are working.
The Chancellor told MPs that people losing their jobs is the thing which “weighs most heavily on me”, adding he cannot guarantee there will not be more job losses in the coming months.
But Mr Sunak said figures suggest almost two million fewer people will lose their jobs than previously feared and his “plan for jobs” is aiding the recovery.
Speaking on day two of the Queen’s Speech debate, Mr Sunak sought to strike an upbeat tone about the road ahead while recognising the setbacks faced by people and businesses.
THE SNP has called for Anas Sarwar to tell his Labour colleagues to vote against a Tory who was suspended over social media posts about the Holocaust from becoming a council leader. Ryan Houghton, who claimed some events of the Holocaust were fabricated , is set to be voted into the role later this week – a move that will only be possible thanks to the votes of nine suspended Labour councillors. Houghton was chosen by colleagues to head up the Tory group on Monday but an official vote will take place on Thursday. Despite their suspension for teaming up with Tories in Aberdeen, earlier this year, Sarwar said he regarded the group as “Labour councillors”, also claiming “they are not former Labour colleagues, I regard them as Labour colleagues, they are Labour councillors doing a good job”.

Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s goalkeeper Megan Walsh has signed a new contract until June 2023.
The 26-year-old has made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the ten-year history of the WSL, while keeping four clean sheets in her last six games.
Walsh told brightonandhovealbion.com: “I’m delighted to sign this new contract and hopefully I can help the club go from strength to strength.
“We’ve had some great results in recent weeks and we’re looking to finish the season strongly. The team spirit is fantastic, and I love working with the squad every day, especially the goalkeepers in our group.
