It’s pretty amazing when a team has a goal of the week candidate, extends their season-opening unbeaten run to five games, tops the Supporters’ Shield standings by four points, and none of those things being the biggest talking point afterward. All you have to do is lose two players to injuries and have a midfielder-turned-wingback make three saves as an emergency goalkeeper to preserve a 1-0 victory for your 10-man side.
Just another Wednesday in Major League Soccer.
On the road against a San Jose side off to almost as hot of a start (9 points in four games) and rolling out a first-choice lineup, head coach Brian Schmetzer rotated his squad and formation. The Sounders were deployed in a 3-4-3 set and started two teenagers in Danny Leyva and Ethan Dobbelaere. For the first time in two seasons, the MLS Player’s Association released the salary guide for its players.
Normally a bi-yearly occurrence, the 2020 salary guide was not released last year. Initially pushed back over the collective bargaining agreement negotiations, the ongoing worldwide pandemic further delayed its release as the season was temporarily suspended in March 2020.
Because the initial CBA was never ratified, during the pause, MLS went back to the MLSPA and demanded concessions, which included an across-the-board pay cut, among other things. For a 1-0 win, that sure was a wild ride. Your Seattle Sounders travelled to San Jose for a midweek date with the Earthquakes and came out victorious, thanks in large part to the Brothers Roldan. Cristian scored what proved to be the match-winner, while Alex filled in at goalkeeper and made three saves after Shane O’Neill went through Stefan Frei.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Cristian Roldan scored in the 18th minute to help the Seattle Sounders beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Wednesday night.
The Sounders (4-0-1) have matched their best start in franchise history, previously accomplished in 2019, but it could end up being a costly victory.
Goalkeeper Stefan Frei sustained what appeared to be a serious left leg injury landing awkwardly while attempting to make a save late in the second half. Frei was down for several minutes before being helped to the locker room putting no weight on the leg.
