Two county governing agencies have agreed to back financing for development of a new business park in Newton’s northeast corner. The Newton County Board of Commissioners and the county Water & Sewerage Authority approved an intergovernmental agreement early this week to share the responsibility for guaranteeing $16.1 million in bonds for purchase of undeveloped land at I-20 and U.S. Highway 278 to establish Stanton Grove business park.

A county commissioner says he will be among those opposing a controversial plan for a travel center and fast-food restaurants at I-20 and Georgia Hwy. 11 when the county planning commission considers it Tuesday night, Jan. 26. District 1 Commissioner Stan Edwards said area residents have overwhelmingly opposed the proposal by Jackson-based Jones Petroleum for a travel center covering 19 acres of a 46-acre site.

District 1 County Commissioner Stan Edwards says he wanted to clarify some information regarding the county Public Facilities Authority s delay in approving bond financing for the planned Fire Station 4 in east Newton including the effect it will have on other stations. Without addressing the political tactics used during the (Authority s) meeting Tuesday I will provide some history and perspective relating to station 4’s current disposition and how it impacts the entire county’s safety. Station 8 will be addressed to an extent as well. Edwards said in a prepared release.
