The MAC gets colorful facelift

The MAC gets colorful facelift The Telegraph FacebookTwitterEmail STAUNTON The Macoupin Art Collective has added more color to its building at 115 E. Main St., Staunton this time with a facelift. The nonprofit purchased the former Mancell Music Building in July 2019 and has been working to renovate and re-imagine its use. With the mission of “art to all,” The MAC has looked to the community to support this project. Volunteers from many organizations helped to complete the undertaking. DL Whitlock and Bernie Gietl of Carlinville created the 8-foot tall logo. The couple, part of Imagine Rural Arts, volunteered their labor. Fellow Main Street proprietors Jeff and Megan Crotty supplied the necessary equipment.

Staunton City Council public input by phone-ins

View Comments The outrage over the Staunton City Council returning to its normal form of public input is ridiculous and totally manufactured by political partisans in an effort to unseat what they believe to be a conservative council. If the absence of phone-in public comments is a First Amendment violation, why wasn’t the ACLU contacted under the previous, more liberal city council? Not a single meeting chaired by Mayor Carolyn Dull allowed public comment over the phone. The phone-in comments were an accommodation of the COVID-19 pandemic. With nearly 150 million people receiving the shot and the seven-day moving average for new infections the lowest it had been in eight months, it is reasonable for things to begin returning to normal.

Staunton City Council ends call-ins, not responding to citizens

This is a copy of a letter I sent to the Staunton City Council: Frankly I am struggling for words to address the Staunton City Council. Disappointment is inadequate. You have had three weeks since you received the letter from the ACLU and two other organizations regarding your silencing of citizen voices. I have written you several times, as many others have regarding this issue. I’ve called in on that fateful April 8 when you chose to end call-in communication. I appeared per your demand at the last City Council meeting, even though it was a hardship to do so. Yet my voice and the voices of many others are prevented from being heard. That you did not take up this issue and resolve it tonight is shameful. Instead of building community you are destroying it!

Former Big Lots shopping center up for auction in Staunton s west end

View Comments STAUNTON The former Big Lots shopping center is up for auction, according to Ten-X.com, a commercial auction listing site.  The auction will be held online Monday, May 17 with the starting bid at $200,000, according to the site. The new auction listing comes after owner Joe Harding was attempting to get his shopping center, Chestnut Hills, rezoned from general business to light industrial, according to city documents.  Now, he says he s looking for potential investors for the property located on West Beverley Street in Staunton s west end. What I d like to do is continue to be part owner, he said. My preference would be to find a partner.
