MANISTEE COUNTY Despite the frigid temperatures in Manistee this weekend, warmth still abounds this time of year.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, the News Advocate reached out to local couples for their secrets to a long, happy marriage.
Lifelong Kaleva residents, Jan and Ray Bradley have devoted the past 50 years to one another. Over the years their family grew to include children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He said: “I’ve never been a runner but with all sport cancelled I needed something to keep me active, but also to challenge myself. So when we decided to take on this challenge I instantly wanted to do it to prove to myself that I can do it and get fitter whilst doing it, but also to help those in need. It also gives me the motivation to carry on and not give up.” Lewis is a keen sports fan like his friends, supporting Arsenal and Newport County. He said: “During lockdown I was getting very bored and unfit as football training had stopped and with no school, PE had stopped too. Ben, Ollie and I had an idea to start running consistently. So, we started a challenge to run 100k in the month of January and raise money. This challenge will benefit me a lot with my fitness but mainly I’m doing it to help out children in a worse

Emma Hinde has received an offer to study Spanish and German at Oxford from October. The 18-year-old, from Wrexham, also received interest from Russell Group universities but has her heart set on attending the elite institution. Her natural flair for languages became apparent as a pupil at St Joseph’s High School, which in tandem with a love for travel led her in this direction. However, she admits that while her future may lie overseas, the here and now is what is important, especially given the challenges of 2020. “I have no definitive path and will see where life takes me, but I could look at becoming a translator, writer, teacher or any number of careers with this degree,” said Emma.
