COLONIE A special prosecutor will be assigned to the case of a sergeant of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department who was fired last week after his second drunk driving arrest.
Prosecutors allege Daniel Coppola, 26, of Rotterdam, drove on a curb and nearly hit a utility pole with his car while more than twice the legal limit for drunkenness on April 26.
Coppola, the stepson of Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino, did not appear in Colonie Town Justice Court for Monday’s arraignment because of a medical issue, according to his lawyer, Andrew Safranko.

Both incidents happened April 20, officials said in a release Tuesday. As a result, the sheriff undertook a facility-wide searches for additional contraband and found some on three other inmates, officials said.
Officials did not identify the suspected cause of the medical incidents, but corrections supervisors and medical personal administered two doses of Narcan to revive one of the inmates, officials said.
The incident began when an inmate was taken to Ellis Hospital to be evaluated after they were found to be under the influence of an unknown substance, officials said.

A sergeant in the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department, the son of the sheriff, has been fired after being arrested on drunk driving charges in Colonie Monday night, authorities said.
Sgt. Daniel Coppola, 26, was arrested by Colonie police just before 10 p.m. Monday on Central Avenue at the intersection of Reber Street, police said.
Witnesses had observed Coppola swerving and town officer pulled him over after he moved from his lane unsafely, Colonie police Lt. James Gerace said.
Coppola faces one count each of driving while intoxicated and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content above 0.18%, more than twice the legal limit. He also was issued a traffic ticket for moving from his lane unsafely, police said.
