Firefighters scramble to protect neighboring homes from fast-spreading flames

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters found themselves in a race against nature at the scene of a house fire on the city’s Southwest Side Friday morning. They found flames burning through the roof of one home in the 1300 block of Schley Avenue when they arrived around 3:30 a.m. Thanks to nature, the fire was threatening to spread. “We had about a 20 mile an hour wind coming from the north. It contributed to the build-up of flame,” said Capt. Gabe Ortega with SAFD. “We knew that main house was already gone when we got here, so our main goal was to protect the other houses on either side.”

Free parking a focus of Lewes committee

The challenge of parking in downtown Lewes isn’t limited to the metered areas. For several months, the downtown business district parking committee has been brainstorming ways to encourage use of free parking areas just a bit farther from the business district. Ideas include reconfiguring and beautifying the stoned parking lot at the corner of Schley Avenue and Franklin Avenue. The lot is along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail about a quarter-mile from Second Street. From the lot, it’s a straight walk to Kings Highway and Zwaanendael Park. From there, Second Street is a block away. There have been several issues raised about why the parking lot is underutilized. Besides the desire to park in front of the shop or restaurant a visitor wants to patronize, committee members have determined the lot’s appearance is problematic. For years, the lot has been used as a staging area for various construction projects, and it’s often filled with heavy equipment.

20-50-100 Years Ago — Dec 23

Dec. 23, 1920 A force of motorcycle police to patrol the state roads in an effort to stop automobile banditry will be inaugurated at once, Governor Ritchie announced. The new force will be in effect, a state police force, but, because of the necessities of the law, will be under the immediate direction of the automobile commissioner. The present plans include only a comparatively small force of 20 or 30 men. On motorcycles, however, such a force can cover a large amount of territory. Yesterday, a closed Hudson car, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. James R. Russell of Winchester, Virginia, left the Baltimore State Road at Whip-poor-will Hollow, near New Market, within 100 yards of the spot where Edmund Berger and George Watts met with a fatal accident about a week ago. The Hudson upset after leaving the road.
