And so they had to then re-allocate, and because roughly four percent of the cases are in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, yet those patients account for 50 percent of the deaths in the state, they wanted to re-allocate the limited supplies to those areas. Special to The News Herald RALEIGH — Seventeen short-line railroads will soon make improvements to their infrastructure thanks to about $16.7 million in matching grants being awarded as part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Freight Rail and Rail Crossing Safety Improvement program. The program supports rail infrastructure health, safety and performance throughout the state, enabling NCDOT to partner with rail companies on improvement projects. The partnership helps railroads meet customer needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner while also preparing them for growing service demands and partnerships with new businesses and industries. The projects will provide more than $32 million in rail infrastructure improvements statewide.

Dec. 22 About two-thirds of North Carolina s 100 counties are seeing critical community spread of the coronavirus ahead of Christmas, according to state health officials. Sixty-five counties are in the red zone on the statewide COVID-19 map, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday. That s a jump from 48 counties listed in the most critical tier on Dec. 8. Counties land in the red zone when they report more than 200 cases per 100,000 people in a two-week period. Areas in this category also see a high impact on local hospitals or a positive test rate of more than 10%, according to the state.
