Chic Brodie attacks SNP for ignoring lorry crisis that could kill Scottish economy

THE SNP Government has been accused of a “catastrophic failure” after concerns raised about a lorry driver shortage five years ago were ignored – now putting Scotland’s £85 billion export industry at risk. It is believed up to 100,000 driver vacancies now exist across the UK – exacerbated by the pandemic causing disruption to qualification process and Brexit impacts on the workforce. The situation has been blamed for food shortages in supermarkets.  But SNP ministers have sat on warnings of a looming crisis to Scotland’s economy since 2016. UK ignoring shortage of 100,000 HGV drivers amid Scottish supply fears

Exclusive Manufacturers like sweet company Haribo are struggling to get stock to stores as the problem is expected to get ‘worse before it gets better’ SCOTTISH industry leaders have warned the UK Government it must act urgently to address a lorry driver crisis, with fears over increasing food shortages and price rises in the coming months. A nationwide lack of HGV drivers means retailers and suppliers are struggling to transport goods around the UK, with the Road Haulage Association estimating a shortage of up to 100,000 roles. The issue is leading to gaps on shelves for products ranging from fresh food and soft drinks to confectionery and beer. Last week sweets manufacturer Haribo said it was struggling to get stocks to stores.
