Scottish Sea Farms has been working proactively to reduce its use of antibiotics for several years now
Scottish salmon farms are currently striving to deliver on ambitious fish health targets, with one prominent firm recently achieving a major industry milestone by completely eliminating the use of antibiotics across all their farming activities Scottish Sea Farms, one of Scotland’s leading salmon farming companies, has achieved a first in farmed fish health, with no antibiotics used in any of its farming operations in 2020. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – where bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites become resistant to a medicine, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spreading – is considered by the World Health Organisation to be amongst the top 10 threats to global health.

SALMON producer Scottish Sea Farms says it has achieved an important global milestone by not using any antibiotics in any of its farming operations in 2020.Â
The company is one of the three large players in salmon farming in Shetland.

Head of veterinary services Ronnie Soutar said zero antibiotic usage represented an important first both for Scottish Sea Farms and for the Scottish sector as a whole.
A CUSTOM-DESIGNED air processing system already being used in Canada is to be trialled in Scotland to deal with plankton which is potentially harmful to farmed salmon. Scottish Sea Farms is to test the greener system, Flowpressor, to protect its salmon from what it called a major threat to the health of farmed fish worldwide. Many species and concentration of plankton are vital to a healthy ecosystem, but others can harm humans and animals. In the case of farmed salmon they can cause damage to the gills and deprive the fish of oxygen. Aeration is the process of pumping air into salmon pens to boost water movement and quality, and is one of several protective measures taken by salmon farmers when rising levels of plankton are detected during daily water monitoring.
