UNION CITY When a small group of anti-vaccination protesters raised a ruckus at a bill-signing Wednesday, Gov. Phil Murphy decided to unholster his trademark insult and fire away.
“You are the ultimate knuckleheads!” he yelled, eliciting cheers from a crowd of supporters.
The short confrontation came as COVID vaccination efforts have slowed considerably in New Jersey, going from about 40,000 shots a day in mid-June to fewer than 20,000 in recent weeks. About 5.3 million New Jerseyans about 58% of the state s 9.2 million residents are fully vaccinated.
Cases and hospitalizations have risen considerably as the highly contagious delta variant has become the dominant coronavirus strain in New Jersey, appearing in 84% of samples statewide. Murphy mandated this week that all health care workers get vaccinated or be tested for COVID weekly.

As the Biden administration and some states began to mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for government employees last week, Gov. Phil Murphy remained non-committal, commenting only with his trademark, No news on that yet.
But as the week wore on with hospitalizations and case counts growing, Murphy appeared to be strongly considering mandates, at least for some government workers. We re considering a whole series of steps as we speak and my guess is we ll take the weekend and continue to suss out those potential options, he said on CNN Friday.
Vaccinating workers at state health care centers, long-term care facilities including the state s three veterans homes, and at prisons are our highest area of focus, Murphy said.
