Jamie Whincup keeps up Triple Eight dominance, ends SVG streak with Race 7 win
1 day ago
Jamie Whincup has taken his first win of 2021 and 123rd in total with a strong display in the first of two Supercars Championship races today at Symmons Plains, ending the winning streak of Triple Eight team-mate Shane Van Gisbergen in the process.
Coming in to the race qualifying second on the grid, Whincup was able to harass pole-sitter Cam Waters throughout the race, getting a leg up on the Tickford Racing driver late in the 44 lap outing to take the race lead.
Leading home a one-two finish for Triple Eight, Whincup was able to extend his team’s dominance at the Tasmanian venue to 22 victories from the last 32 races, also making it eight wins in a row for the team which started at last year’s Bathurst 1000.

Symmons Plains was another circuit that was sorely missed in the Covid-19 affected schedule for the 2020 Supercars championship and after a year on the sidelines, the Tasmania SuperSprint put on a spectacle.
Delayed by a week also, due to border closures in response to the most recent breakout of Covid-19 in Queensland, seeing the Supercars grid tackle the 2.4km, shortest circuit on the calendar was a sight for sore eyes.
From breaking a long-standing record for wins, to a confusing qualifying format and all the other fix-ins – here are the talking points from the Tasmania SuperSprint.
Shane van Gisbergen blitzes qualifying in Tasmania
1 day ago
Shane van Gisbergen produced an astonishing performance in qualifying at Symmons Plains as he stormed to a fourth pole of the Supercars season in record-breaking fashion.
The session would see the first appearance of a new qualifying format, with the field split in two for the opening phase of running.
Two groups of twelve cars would hit the track for a five minute blast to determine who would make it through to Q2, with the leading eight drivers from each group continuing on in the session.
In Group A, WIll Davison was the first man to set a really quick lap on a 50.8939 before points leader van Gisbergen moved into P1 with lap just shy of the fastest time seen in the two free practice session ahead of Cam Waters – the man who had topped practice.

Sensational six: SVG dominates Tassie opener Repco Supercars Championship By James Pavey
Shane van Gisbergen has claimed a record-equalling sixth straight win in 2021 in an assured performance at Symmons Plains.
Van Gisbergen’s bid for victory came after he managed to recover from a poor start to regain the lead from Cameron Waters early on.
Waters led the early stanza of the race, only to be overtaken at Turn 6 by the championship leader.
The Tickford Racing driver battled to sixth, with Jamie Whincup making it a Red Bull Ampol Racing one-two.
The early laps suggested van Gisbergen’s winning run would be halted, with Waters forcing his way into an early lead.
