OUTSOURCED security guards at hospitals in East Lancashire have announced they are going on strike later this month. The 30 members of staff employed by private contractor Engie Services - who work at Burnley General Hospital and Royal Blackburn Hospital - will be taking industrial action for 48 hours on March 21 at 6.30pm over their employer’s failure to pay NHS rates. Outsourcing giant Engie pays the hospital workers the minimum wage rate, which leaves some of the Lancashire security staff up to £6,000 per year worse off compared to security guards employed on NHS terms. Union Unison has been trying to resolve this issue for months, and security workers are angry at the lack of progress since they submitted a pay claim in October 2020.
