Livonia council approves leash law, denies pets weather-related help

View Comments Pet owners in Livonia will have to keep their four-legged family members on a leash when not on their own property or at a dog park.  Livonia council voted Monday to adopt a leash law and shot down a proposal that would place some weather restrictions on when homeowners can leave pets outside for an extended period.  Both were brought to council s attention by residents and nonresidents concerned about the wellbeing of dogs and, in the leash law s case, those they come in contact with. The discussion also prompted Livonia s representative in the Michigan Senate, Dayna Polehanki, to propose a pet-related bill intended to protect animals statewide during extreme weather.

Livonia considers leash, extreme temperature laws for pets

Livonia considers leash, extreme temperature laws for pets Pet owners in Livonia, especially those with dogs, may soon have a few extra rules to follow.  City council is considering two ordinances: One would require animals be leashed at all times when off their owner s property and another would limit how long pets can stay outdoors in extreme cold or heat.  Both were brought to council s attention by residents concerned about the wellbeing of dogs and, in the leash law s case, those they come in contact with. Council will vote on both items at its April 26 meeting. Weather restrictions In late February, residents expressed concern about a homeowner who left three beagles outdoors for long periods of time when metro Detroit was experiencing a cold snap. Now, council is considering an ordinance amendment requiring owners to keep pets in a climate-controlled environment when the National Weather Service issues a weather warning, which could be on anything from temperatures

Livonia police, firefighter pensions reinstated

To recruit and retain quality police officers, Livonia City Council is reinstating defined benefit pensions and, for further enticement, offering more flexible 12-hour shifts. Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan said those two new elements in the latest three-year union contract means the city is willing to invest in the community as well as its police department, which is now down by 31 officers. She explained that the city stepped away from pensions in the 1990s because of an economic downtown that brought income and revenue losses. Creating a new pension program for Livonia s emergency responders was one of Brosnan s top priorities when stepping into the elected mayor s role in 2020. Approved late last year, the new 2018-21 firefighters contract revived pensions for a department that had been down by about 10 firefighters.
