The School Board of Manatee County approved Lakewood Ranch Charter Academy s application in a 3-2 vote during its meeting April 27.
Charlie Kennedy and Rev. James Golden were the dissenting votes.
Southwest Charter Foundation, a nonprofit that runs eight charter schools across the state including Manatee Charter School, is partnering with Charter Schools USA to open Lakewood Ranch Charter Academy.
The charter school will be a K-12 school focused on science and health with a mission of its students becoming lifelong learners.
Lakewood Ranch Charter Academy will implement the WISH framework, which focuses on wellness, innovation, science and health.
Eddie Ruiz, the state director for Charter Schools USA for Florida, said the school will develop partnerships with the Brain Health Initiative, LECOM and the School District of Manatee County.

While the long term impacts of the spill have yet to be seen, the areaâs popular beaches have not been impacted and visitor numbers have stayed the same, county leaders said.

PALMETTO, Fla. (WWSB) - It’s been two weeks now since contaminated water started leaking at the Piney Point site. Lots of progress has been made since then. Dr. Scott Hopes, Acting Manatee County Administrator giving us an inside look at the site on Friday.
”We’re well on our way to having the final chapter at Piney Point,” said Hopes.
A massive operation continues every day in different parts of the Piney Point site. Hopes says because of the team effort, a major disaster was averted.

HRK warned of disaster at Piney Point for months and asked for help, now DEP says they’re on the hook

HRK holdings spent months warning Manatee commissioners and state officials of impending disaster at Piney Point. Despite the pleas for help, Florida officials said HRK will be on the hook for a narrowly avoided catastrophe at the shuddered phosphate plant that it owns.
Florida DEP head Noah Valenstein said a legal team in Tallahassee is working just as hard as crews on the ground at Piney Point cleaning the spill.
