A confusing picture
I am confused after considering two Jan. 7 Journal articles (âGovernor extends statewide curfew for three weeks,â âCounty schools forge ahead with reopening plansâ), one posted above the other.
Gov. Roy Cooper said . in North Carolina, we have seen some of our highest case counts, percent positives, hospitalizations and ICU bed usage numbers in the past few days. No matter where you live, work, worship or play, COVID-19 remains a deadly threat, and we must treat it that way.
N.C. Health Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen warned, âThere is an alarming amount of virus everywhere in our state. We are in a very dangerous position and this is the most worried I have been during the pandemic. Every single North Carolinian needs to take immediate action to save lives and protect themselves and each other.â
COOLEEMEEÂ â The little white house on South Main Street, from the road, looks perfectly fine.
The 2-bedroom, 1-bath dwelling is best described as modest; realtors might call it a âhandymanâs specialâ or a âfixer-upper. It was built in 1920, and the legal description in Davie County property tax records â lot 294 Erwin Mills â indicates that it originally was constructed to house textile workers.
For years, it was home to a man named Stevie Smith. Following his death in 2016, for a short time, the little house became a symbol of hope when Smithâs sister donated it to a nonprofit organization for use as transitional housing for the homeless.

Pulaski County High School is getting ready to air their winter concert this Sunday, December 20. Submitted
Local high school bands are finding ways to make beautiful music this holiday season â even if itâs in very different ways than they expected.
Earlier this month, Southwesternâs band recorded their seasonal concert â performed outside, with masks made to go around instruments â and played it on YouTube so families of the students could see and hear. Sibling school Pulaski County High School is getting ready to air their winter concert this Sunday, December 20 â with more candy cane-like twists.
