Battin Closing In On 5,000 Wins
Veteran horseman Ross Battin recorded his 4,996th career driving win aboard the 14-year-old pacer Lawmen Reign on March 29 at The Raceway. The duo scored from off the pace in a ‘Seniors Pace’ event for older horses, which has seen the likes of Leafs And Wings and Acefortyfourtalon also add wins to their long-lasting career stats.
Career Milestones
A few horses, showing their most recent starts in London, are closing in on career milestones for earnings:
Ufdragons Rocket: $499,730
Mac Raider: $199,819
Track Record In March
On March 24, Power And Grace, owned by Hartel Maintenance Inc. and Lormer McClure, added her name to a long list of track record holders at The Raceway. The big went all the way to a 1:57.1 trotting win with Brett McDonald aboard for trainer Ron MacDonald. The record clocking lowered the previous track record at The Raceway for aged trotting mares of 1:57.2, which was set by Must Sold Dream (Trevor Henry) in November 2006.

Last to the half, but first to the finish line was the tactical approach taken by driver Scott Coulter with YS Tallia in Thursday’s $10,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Handicap at Flamboro Downs.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite, YS Tallia got away fifth in the compact group while Manhattan Night marched to the top and sliced out first-half fractions of :29.3 and 1:01. YS Tallia tipped to the outside on the way to the mid-way point, and she quickly got into gear for Coulter.
She made a powerful brush to the top in the backstretch and swept past the three-quarter pole in 1:29.3 before using a :29.1 final frame to win by a half-length margin over I Wish You Well in 1:58.4. Manhattan Night took home the show dough.
The Columbus Symphony wasn’t about to try.
For its love song-filled concert Saturday in the Palace Theatre, the symphony will admit 300 socially distanced, face-mask-wearing attendees marking the first time that Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz will lead the group before a live audience since the start of the pandemic.
“I didn’t realize, until it was gone, how much of what I do is playing off the audience and their reaction,” said Chafetz, who conducted the symphony’s “Holiday Spectacular” program, which was recorded without an audience for broadcast on WBNS-TV (Channel 10) in December.
“It’s amazing when that’s gone and there’s no reaction,” Chafetz said.
