City boundary wildfire mitigation activities move forward | Cranbrook, East Kootenay

Posted: March 4, 2021 Mayor Lee Pratt After a recent tour of the City of Cranbrook’s southern forested border, Mayor Lee Pratt feels that it was appropriate to thank the dedicated individuals and organizations responsible for the excellent Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR) work that has been completed. To date, more than 300 hectares of forested lands have had fuel treatments applied to them reduce the risk of approaching wildfires. This work has had funding in excess of $1 million applied through the province’s Wildfire Risk Reduction Program. “This is an issue that has taken years of lobbying, meetings and hard work. We are finally seeing progress with respect to the fuel problem, and I have to thank our partners in government and industry for that,” said Mayor Pratt. “It’s an issue that I have spoken to multiple (provincial government) ministers about, and to see the great work that has been completed certainly helps me sleep at night.”

Feb 2, 2021 LISBON In county Municipal Court, Ryan Mathew Hoschar, 24, Boston Street, Washingtonville, was bound over to the grand jury on charges of violating a protection order, burglary, endangering children, drug abuse instruments, obstructing official business and drug paraphernalia. On Jan. 21, Hoschar entered the New Waterford home of Carly Williams, who had a protection order against him. Additionally, Hoschar allegedly left a cut straw and a bottle cap containing narcotic residue in the home, where there were two small children, ages 6 and 1, able to access them. He further is alleged to have fled from the home and police, who commanded him to stop and evaded them for about two hours. A syringe was reportedly found along the path where he fled. Hoschar’s bond is $15,000 cash or surety.

Canada Post operations resume after hazardous materials call

Posted: February 1, 2021 Canada Post operations resume after hazardous materials call Operations at Canada Post in downtown Cranbrook have resumed Monday morning, following a potential hazardous materials incident. Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services received the call, for an unidentified powder at the Canada Post facility on 1st St. South between 9th and 10th Avenue South. Fire personnel responded to the scene, secured the area, and proceeded to investigate the cause of the incident. Firefighters determined the unidentified substance to be harmless, and Canada Post was able to resume operations without delay, the city reported this morning (Feb. 1). “We thank the public for respecting our need to create safe workspaces at emergency incidents. In addition, the Fire Department commends the staff at Canada Post for their safe and effective response to a potentially hazardous situation.
