Genesis Center sale to be finalized next week; lifted zoning barrier surprises council

GARY — City leaders say they should finalize the sale of the Genesis Convention Center next week with Akyumen Industries, a Los Angeles-based smartphone manufacturer and tech company seeking to plant its headquarters here.  Akyumen plans to move its corporate headquarters into the underused convention center while building a factory on the old Ivanhoe Gardens housing site at 11th Avenue and Chase Street — where the company says they will manufacture 5G phones, tablets and phablets. The company is acquiring 1 Genesis Center Plaza for $2.5 million that included a $150,000 down payment, Eric Reaves, head of community investment for Gary, said. Reaves confirmed to the Common Council on Tuesday night that Akyumen has 180 days from close of sale to pay the remaining balance after the down payment — with no deadline extension opportunity.

Broadband expansion sought in Franconia

Broadband expansion sought in Franconia January 13, 2021FRANCONIA Citing the need for expanded broadband in the area, Iron Furnace Brewery has applied for a site plan review with the Franconia Planning Board. At a public hearing held on Dec. 29, brewery owner and Mountain Top Telecom Vice-Chair Tim Clough told the Planning Board that an existing dish mounted on the back of the building was no longer sufficient enough to meet demand. The construction of a standalone 44-foot meshed tower would provide a better line of sight to Mountain Top Telecom s Cannon Mountain signal. According to meeting minutes, Clough said relocating the dish to a new tower would provide four times more bandwidth to the area. Mountain Top Telecom recently received a grant to fund much-needed equipment upgrades.

With an affirmative vote Monday on action steps, which councilors deemed consistent with the town’s master plan, the hope is to encourage more housing options for people from all economic backgrounds. “We have a massive deficit of housing in this town,” said At-Large Councilor Mandi Jo Hanneke. The 10-3 vote in support of the zoning priorities recommended by the council’s Community Resources Committee came despite concerns raised in writing from several residents, including from a group calling itself Citizens for Better Planning.
