The Health Department said that the district had 11,731 active cases of the disease and 1,705 persons recovered from the disease on Sunday. The district’s death toll increased to 759 after the department on Sunday notified nine more deaths. As per the media bulletin, eight persons died of COVID-19 at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on May 6, 7 and 8 while one person succumbed to the disease at a private hospital on May 8. According to the department, the district had 701 non-oxygen beds, 42 oxygen beds and 12 ICU beds reserved for COVID-19 patients remaining vacant as of Sunday evening. A total of 438 beds remained vacant in COVID Care Centres.

The Health Department reported the death of six persons five men and one woman who were undergoing treatment for COVID-19. The district has 10,460 active cases and a total of 1,491 persons were discharged on Friday. As on Friday, the district has 908 vacant beds (oxygen beds, non-oxygen beds and ICU beds) in government and private hospitals A total of 198 beds were vacant in the COVID-19 care centres (CCC).

The Corporation is also planning to increase bed strength at the COVID-19 Care Centres here. The Corporation reports at least half of the daily cases in the district and the officials have been imposing fines on individuals and businesses violating COVID-19 protocols. The Corporation increased the number of tests in its limits and the results are being released in 24 hours. According to officials, the Corporation has about 1,800 active cases as on Friday. Measures are being taken to prevent public gatherings. On an average, 2,500 swab samples are collected from Corporation limits on a day and 70 fever camps are also conducted. The Corporation has deployed over 600 fieldworkers to conduct door-to-door screening.

Salem Corporation Commissioner N.Ravichandran said in a release that the civic body is looking for volunteers to bring in more persons for the fever camps, to create awareness on COVID-19 disease, conducting door-to-door screening, delivering essentials and medicines to residences in quarantine zones, to prevent the public from venturing out of quarantine zones and to inform officials about persons violating safety norms. The Corporation said in a release that interested persons could download the google form in the Corporation’s website and apply for the position.
