A 165-year-old Niagara church built by Harriet Tubman and other freed slaves will be preserved for future generations, says one of the trustees and historians behind its restoration effort.
Salem Chapel British Methodist Episcopal church in St. Catharines has been in a state of disrepair and was a safety concern.
Last week, the church was approved for a $100,000 grant through the federal Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative, says Rochelle Bush. We re very happy we received the funding, Bush told CBC News. We are extremely grateful because the church will now be preserved for future generations.

A beloved Waynesboro pastor will be retiring at the end of the year after serving Salem Church for 23 years.
Lin Smalec and her husband Andy came to Salem Church in June 1997, shortly after she was ordained by Eden Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. The Waynesboro-based church, founded in the late 1700s, is one of the oldest churches in the area. Being at Salem Church has been an absolute blessing, Liz Smalec said. I came to the church right at a time when they were primed for change and they were ready for anything which allowed me to do a lot of creative things with worship and missions. It created a lot of fun times during my time there.

Planners are looking to spend $5 million to improve traffic flow outside of Spotsylvania Towne Center.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says the proposed project will enhance capacity and improve traffic flow by eliminating the right turn lane bump-out areas along Route 3 westbound between Route 639 (Bragg Road), at Mission Barbecue, and Salem Church Road Eliminating these areas will allow this travel lane to be used by through traffic and by traffic turning right.
On Route 3 eastbound, a concrete island at the right turn lane to Mall Drive will be modified, and the right lane will become a shared through travel and right turn la Planners are looking to spend $5 million to improve traffic flow on Route 3, just outside of Spotsylvania Towne Center.
