Report: Fraternities Cut Ties with Duke After University Creates New Restrictions Duke Chapel Duke University s Greek life could be on the outs after seven fraternities made the decision to disaffiliate from the university s Interfraternity Council, Duke Chronicle reported Tuesday. Two more organizations are waiting to hear from their national organizations before making a decision. The individual decisions come after the university decided to prohibit potential new members from rushing until their sophomore year as part of an effort to revamp on-campus living situations and allow communities from East Campus to keep their groups together once students move onto West Campus. In the announcement, the university mentioned that Greek life would move away from its current building situation, and only allow juniors and seniors to live in their special dorms. MSU Greek life is moving and growing

The Greek life community at Mississippi State University consists of four main divisions: the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the Multicultural Greek Council. Two of these councils, the Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils, are experiencing some growth this fall.  Sigma Phi Epsilon, or SigEp, a fraternal chapter at MSU since 1938, was removed from campus in 2014 after having their charter revoked. According to a previous Reflector article, the fraternity s charter and house were revoked following hazing violations. They returned to campus in the fall of 2017 and have been working to get their house back ever since.  Austin Wesley, a junior electrical engineering major and vice president of communication for SigEp for the 2021 calendar year, joined the chapter in 2018 and said the chapter has been working on rechartering with their alumni association.

Kristina Essig, an MU sophomore and Alpha Delta Pi’s Alpha Gamma chapter president brings new meaning to someone who genuinely cares for her sorority and not about superficial stereotypes. While applying to colleges in high school, Essig focused mainly on out-of-state schools to branch out from her Dallas hometown. She participated in theater in high school but knew writing was always where she did her best work. “Mizzou made me feel wanted because Mizzou was always in my mailbox, and then they invited me to be a part of their Walter Williams Scholar program,” Essig said, explaining how everything fell perfectly into place with MU.

Photo Submitted by Sigma Nu The online switch has been difficult for many clubs and organizations. Some decided that taking a break would be the best course of action, and others, like Greek life, have continued operation. Greek life at Georgia State comprises four councils: the National Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and National Multicultural Greek Council. All councils had to operate online and social distance for the first time during 2020’s fall recruitment. Greek life students have had to learn how to pitch their organizations more than ever to continue their appeal to gain new members.
