A smorgasbord of entertainment, food, and retail opportunities is set to arrive in Rolleston, with the Rolleston Fields development underway. Featuring a retail precinct, bars and eateries, a covered weekend farmers market, food hall, health and wellness offerings, and an entertainment and cinema complex, it s something for residents and families in wider Christchurch to get excited about. This is not one big shopping mall or cluster of shops with a street running through the middle, says Caroline Cooper-Dixon of Tennyson55, which is behind the $85 million development. These are well-designed, well thought out buildings formed around a central town, with its people and community as the driving force.

Residents and commuters using the new motorway between Christchurch and Rolleston says it saves them about 15 minutes each way. This week Cooper put her Sydenham mall The Colombo on the market, a decade after she bought it from receivers for developer Dave Henderson and revamped it as a boutique shopping centre. The Colombo has about 40 tenants including Smiths City, Academy Gold Cinema, and small fashion and food outlets. Cooper tried unsuccessfully to sell the mall two years ago. Her other projects have included renovating and developing Hotel Montreal, redeveloping the Countdown Moorhouse complex, and restoring several heritage buildings.

Christchurch Surgeon and Bowel Cancer NZ medical adviser Frank Frizelle has cautioned against over-interpreting studies that seek to prove a link between nitrates and bowel cancer.
A medical adviser for Bowel Cancer NZ has criticised studies linking lower levels of nitrates in drinking water with an increased risk of bowel cancer. A major Danish study published in 2018 found a significant increase in bowel cancer when nitrate levels were just 0.87 milligrams per litre of water and a 15 per cent increase at 2.1mg per litre. The current safe level in New Zealand, as mandated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is 11mg per litre.
