A Look Back at 150 Years of Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, the Glamorous South of France Hideaway

Built into the craggy cliffside, the water appears to blend seamlessly into the ocean below, and holidaymakers as photographer and frequent hotel fixture Slim Aarons often referred to them have been known to spend several weeks of the summer season languishing on a chaise in the South of France sunshine.

Ken Burns, Lynn Novick On Their Ernest Hemingway Documentary, Masculinity, Gender Fluidity

PBS In the 1920s, Zelda Fitzgerald said of Ernest Hemingway, “Nobody is as male as all that.” Fitzgerald saw right through the hypermasculine persona Hemingway cultivated: the gun-toting, hard-drinking, deep sea-fishing, big game-hunting, bullfighting, street-brawling, womanizing facade that lingers to this day. What this ossified mythology obscures is the real Hemingway, who we see illuminated from cradle to grave in Hemingway, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s new three-part documentary, airing on PBS April 5th-7th. Viewed through Burns and Novick’s revelatory lens, Hemingway emerges as a troubled and tragic figure, insecure about his masculinity and privately fascinated with gender fluidity, who produced some of the most miraculous work in the American canon.

Vivian Gornick on the Magnetism of Edna St Vincent Millay

Looking Back at the Wild and Elusive Poet March 17, 2021 In 1970 Nancy Milford published a famous biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, one of the fabled bad girls of American literary bohemia. The book is remarkable for the power with which it brings to life the romantic disorder that plagued the Fitzgeralds how loved they were for it! and also for revealing how much more trapped in it was Zelda than Scott. While he could make literature out of their shared circumstance she, his raw material, could only be consumed by it. She had been adored for the chaos within: it was her gift and her karma. There was nothing for it but to go on being outrageous to the truly bitter end.
